Fear and Pain

If we look at it, fear has only a single root cause. Pain.

We’re afraid of getting hurt.

Even the biggest fear, the fear of death, is because of the pain it brings us.

The pain may not always be physical, but any pain still counts as pain.

If we look at any instance that made us worry, scared, anxious, or terrified, it has something to do with pain.

That exam you thought you might fail, that presentation during which you thought you might be laughed at, that job interview that you wanted to pass so bad, that time when you spent sleepless nights worrying about the health of a family member, all these instances caused fear in you because if they turned real, they would cause you immense pain. Be it physical, emotional, psychological, or mental.

Knowing fear is really important because once we get to know the real nature of it, it redirects us to the root cause.

Now, why are we scared of pain? Of course, because we don’t like pain. I mean, who in their right mind does? But we all face it. At some or the other instance in our life. Big or small. Tolerable or devastating.

There’s absolutely no escape from pain whatsoever.

If you just look back, I’m sure there were instances which you thought you’ll never get out of, but you did. We’re never really living our lives at our 100% potential. Which is why we keep surprising ourselves every time we achieve something we thought we may never have or exceed our own expectations about ourselves.

Same goes with pain.

We don’t know how much we can tolerate, but we can tolerate more pain than we ever set out to.

I’m not saying that we should cause ourselves more pain than we might already be going through or that we should keep tolerating it instead of finding remedies to decrease or nullify it.

I’m saying that no matter what kind of pain it is that awaits us, we can be rest assured that we can bear it, and this leads us back to the fear that we’re dealing with. If we know we can tolerate the pain that might come our way, we will also make peace with fear and deal with it much better.

"Don't be afraid!"

Easier said than done?

Not anymore.
